Academic Adventures (Rising Grades 4-5) Course Descriptions

Bishop’s Rocks is an instrumental ensemble designed to help students express themselves creatively through performance of rock hits of the 1970s-2000s in a fun, friendly setting.

Students embrace their creative sides and gain confidence in public speaking.

Students explore how artists tell stories and express ideas through collage, color, and design.

In this course, we will explore many genres of dance and learn choreography in each style, including contemporary, jazz, tap, musical theater, street jazz, lyrical and swing.

Students will explore the basics of electronics and coding by building real, working projects.

In this class, students will learn some fundamental engineering concepts and basic construction methods through the process of design thinking.

While reading and discussing stories, students will write and/or illustrate a creative work inspired by their own questions and interests.

Students will explore the basics of forensic science through observation, experimentation and guided investigation.

This fun and interactive cooking class takes students on a delicious journey through history.

Students travel to notable locations in La Jolla as they explore the history of Bishop’s and the surrounding neighborhood.

Students will become Iron (Fe) Chefs of the kitchen in this fun and engaging course meshing food and science.

Students will explore marine biology through observation, simple experiments, and guided investigation inspired by San Diego’s coastal environment.

Students will employ problem-solving techniques to “escape” the classroom each day. 

Students will learn about investments, personal finance and entrepreneurship.

In this class, students will immerse themselves in all-things magic.

Learn choreography from different musicals and then create your own musical theater choreography.

Discover the tricks and skills you need to establish a strong foundation in drawing.

Students learn easy tips about drama structure, characters, dialogue and action.

This course combines printmaking, mixed media and abstraction to help students investigate how artists use materials, form and color to create striking work.

This class offers students hands-on opportunities to explore a variety of experiments across the physical, chemical and life sciences, as well as engineering.

You will explore how adding heat to an art material can transform it into something different and cool.

You will discover that there is both a science and an art to making a successful slime.

Working with expert coaches, students can learn a new sport or develop more proficient skills in a familiar one.

Students use their hands and stretch their minds as they learn to employ computers, 3D printing and laser cutting to bring their ideas into the physical world.

In this class, we will watch animated shorts and clips from Disney films and then analyze the values they support, how they support them, and how we as audiences interpret them.
