National Parks Record-Setting Expert Visits Bishop’s
Mikah Meyer is finishing up a three-year road trip to all 418 National Park Service sites. When he completes his journey this year, he will be the youngest person in the world to experience all 418 sites in one continuous journey. He has been featured by The Guardian, NPR, Upworthy and The Today Show for his Travel Beyond Convention campaign.
His three-year journey is dedicated in memory of his father, Larry Meyer, a Lutheran minister, who died from esophageal cancer when Mikah was 19. Mikah is doing the trip not only to honor his father but to also share his story of being an openly gay Christian and a pastor’s son. His aim is to help people, by showing "them an example of someone who lives both of those identities proudly.”
An accomplished performer, Mikah sang professionally with the Washington National Cathedral choirs. He is a countertenor, the highest adult male singing voice. He has also created shows ranging from full-length improvised musicals to his very own cabaret show featuring stories from his life and singing performances ranging from classical to gospel, musical theater and spirituals.
Reflecting on his Bishop’s visit, Mikah wrote, “Never doubt that each and every one of you has the power to make someone’s life better by living authentically as you were made. That your difference—the things 2019 tells you make you unworthy—are actually your strengths for making this world a better place. You not only are ordinary; each and every one of you is extraordinary.”
The Bishop’s School is an independent, coeducational college-preparatory day school for students in grades six through twelve who live throughout San Diego County. Founded in 1909, the School is affiliated with the Episcopal church.
