The San Diego Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) held their 2018 student auditions on Saturday, Nov. 3. Eliana Birnbaum-Nahl ’23 earned first place in both categories offered.
Palomar College’s Main Campus in San Marcos hosted the adjudicated competition in their performing arts music complex. Eliana competed in the Youth division (ages 12-14) for both the Musical Theater and Classical Music categories’ preliminary rounds. All students performing in the morning preliminaries received written feedback from their judges to help them learn, grow and improve. The top three contestants in each category were invited to perform in the Finals Concert in the afternoon; winners were announced at the end of the Finals Concert.
For the classical audition, Eliana prepared and sang “Alma del Core” by Caldara and “Memories: A) Very Pleasant, B) Rather Sad” by Ives. Her Musical Theater pieces were “The Simple Joys of Maidenhood” by Lerner and Loewe, and “Schroeder,” by Gesner. All pieces were memorized, no music could be used during the competition.
