Bishop's Sophomore Earns Philanthropy Award

Lila Chitayat ’21 traveled to Seattle in September to receive the 2018 Mona Foundation Youth Philanthropist Award.

As president and founder of Bishop’s Global Citizens Club, Lila is focused on “raising awareness about the need for education and raising funds to support educational initiatives for underprivileged children to afford education, as well as advocating for gender equality.” Lila’s club organizes chapel talks and fundraisers and ensures that student volunteers have an opportunity to establish a personal connection with the kids they are raising funds for through community service activities with the Mona Foundation.

The most recent program the club coordinated was the September school supply drive to benefit Rancho Sespe, an education program for children of migrant workers in Ventura County.

Based in the Seattle area, the Mona Foundation was founded in 1999 and “supports grassroots educational initiatives” to provide access to education for children, increase opportunities for women and girls, and train teachers working in those communities around the world. According to the foundation’s website, their purpose is to "alleviate global poverty by supporting community-led transformation. Our goal is to see children have access to shelter, food, health and education so that they can realize their potential and contribute to the betterment of their own communities.”

After receiving the honor, Lila commented, “The event allowed me to meet such amazing, selfless individuals who do so much to support Mona's cause and provided me with a platform to discuss my motivations behind service with them. It was so inspiring to hear not just the statistics regarding the service, but the empowering stories of the students Mona is helping through their work around the world. It left me feeling inspired and excited to do more at Bishop's and my community to advocate for Mona's cause and only confirmed the fact that Mona has given me such a wonderful purpose and role in philanthropy.”
