Getting to Know Middle School Science Teacher Sarah Solberg

Sarah Solberg joins our science department as a middle school science teacher. Mrs. Solberg taught AP Physics, as well as Physics 1 & 2 at San Diego High School, where she was a member of the Instructional Leadership Team. In addition to certifications in AP Principles of Computer Science, AP Environmental Science and AP Physics, Mrs. Solberg holds an international baccalaureate from United World Colleges. Mrs. Solberg received her bachelor of science degree in environmental science, with a specialization in biological sciences from the University of California, Berkeley.
 
Q: What was your first impression of the Bishop’s Community?
A: Everyone was so warm and welcoming.
 
Q: What do you love most about teaching?
A: I love to share knowledge and make learning accessible. Teaching science is especially fun because there is so much to explore from the micro to macro levels. I also enjoy learning from my colleagues and students every day.
 
Q: What is your greatest accomplishment?
A: I worked in a lab focused on forest health when I was an undergraduate. One summer I measured and documented 3,200 trees across regional parks in the East Bay!

Q: What’s on your bucket list?
A: I would love to travel more. I’m planning on exploring Southeast Asia this summer with my husband.
 
Q: If you could travel in time, what time period would you visit and why?
A: I would love to go back to the 1960s to see the height of the Free Speech Movement.
 
Q: If you had to sing karaoke, which song would you choose?
A: I am an awful singer… no song choice for me!
 
Q: What’s your biggest pet peeve?
A: Stagnancy and unwillingness to try new things
 
Q: What’s the last book you read?
A: “Hillbilly Elegy”
 
Q: Who was your favorite teacher in school and why?
A: My favorite teacher was my high school chemistry teacher, Ms. Berman. She mentored me throughout high school and encouraged me to go into science. It was amazing to go back to my alma mater and teach with her for two years.
 
Q: If you could have a super power, what would it be?
A: I think it would be cool to be invisible.
