  • Balgrosky Hinshaw Family Faculty Chair in Educational Leadership in Athletics

    Established in 2014 by Jean Balgrosky Hinshaw and Parker Hinshaw, parents of Wyatt ‘06, CJ ’09, and Steven ’14 Hinshaw, in appreciation and recognition of the leadership in the athletics program and in support of athletics department programs and faculty. The current holder of this chair is Joel Allen, Bishop’s Athletic Director.
  • Balgrosky-Hinshaw Family Faculty Chair in Biology

    Established in perpetuity in 2007 by Jean Balgrosky Hinshaw and Parker Hinshaw, parents of Wyatt ‘06, CJ '09, and Steven '14 Hinshaw, to honor and thank exceptional Bishop's teachers for the inspiration and outstanding education in biological sciences experienced by Bishop's students. The current holder of this chair is Julie Zedalis, Advanced Placement Biology teacher.
  • Balgrosky-Hinshaw Family Faculty Chair in Mathematics

    Established in perpetuity in 2007 by Jean Balgrosky Hinshaw and Parker Hinshaw, parents of Wyatt ‘06, CJ '09, and Steven '14 Hinshaw to honor and thank Bishop's faculty for extraordinary teaching and inspiration of students in mathematics. The current holder of this chair is Noble Kime, Advanced Placement Calculus teacher.
  • Benchmark Fund Faculty Chair in Learning Support

    Established in 2011 upon the groundbreaking for the construction of the Manchester Library and Learning Center. The current holder of this chair is Ken Chep, Bishop's Learning Cnter Director.

    Established in 2011 upon the groundbreaking for the construction of the Manchester Library and Learning Center.
  • Board Designated Endowment

    The Board Designated Endowment Fund is used to account for funds that are subject to designation by the Board of Trustees as to use of principal and interest.
  • Bradley A. and Cathy C. Geier Chair in History

    Established in 2014 by Cathy and Brad Geier, parents of Caitlin Geier Fisher ’04, Ashley Geier ’05, Lindsay Geier Morgan ’05, William ’07 and Haley ’09 Geier. A former board president, Brad and his wife Cathy, have long supported the School. This endowment gift will help ensure that the intellectual community at Bishop’s thrives for generations to come.
  • Caroline S. Cummins Endowment for the Teaching of the Bible

    Established in 1980 by the Board of Trustees through an initial gift from the estate of Caroline Seely Cummins, who served as Bishop's headmistress from 1921 through 1953.
  • Class of 1992

    Established in 1992 by the parents, grandparents and friends of the Class of 1992 in honor of the graduates of this class and their teachers. This fund is increased by contributions from parents and class members.
  • Class of 1993

    Established in 1993 by the parents, grandparents and friends of the Class of 1993 in honor of the graduates of this class and their teachers. The Edward E. Ford Foundation contributed a matching challenge grant. This fund is increased by contributions from parents and class members.
  • Class of 1994

    Established in 1994 by the parents, grandparents and friends of the Class of 1994 in honor of the graduates of this class and their teachers. This fund is increased by contributions from parents and class members.
     
  • Diana Padelford Binkley Mentoring Award

    Established in 2003 by the family of Diana Padelford Binkley. This award recognizes faculty mentors who inspire Bishop's students.
  • Donor Designated General Endowment

    Established in 2006 by The Bishop's School Board of Trustees.
  • Dorothy Williams

    Established in 1983 by the board of trustees in honor of Dorothy Williams, who served as headmistress from 1975 until her retirement in 1983.  
  • Downing Family Faculty Chair in Economics

    This fund was established in 2009 by Tracy and John Downing, parents of Zachary Downing '13, for a distinguished member of The Bishop's School faculty. The current holder of this chair is Dee Mecham, economics teacher.
  • Edward E. Ford Foundation

    Established in 1993 through a matching challenge grant to the parents of the Class of 1993 to raise significant dollars for the School's Faculty Endowment Fund.
  • Evelyn S. Egtvedt Endowment for the Teaching of Christianity

    Established in 1986 by Evelyn Egtvedt, a longtime devoted friend of The Bishop's School. Mrs. Egtvedt's belief that young people can benefit from the values to be found in Christianity has led her to support the religious studies program at Bishop's.
  • Faculty Sabbatical

    Established in 1998 by the Board of Trustees to provide members of the faculty the opportunity to take paid sabbatical leaves for professional and intellectual enrichment and renewal of their commitment to teaching.
  • Florence Wernham Middle School Chair

    Established in 1998 by a gift from the estate of Florence Chapman Wernham '31. Although the gift was undesignated by Miss Wernham in her will, Bishop's established the chair in her memory, honoring her service as an elementary school teacher in Pacific Beach and Sunday School teacher at St. James-by-the-Sea. The appointment is held for a three-year term by an outstanding teacher in Bishop's Middle School. The current holder of this chair is David Johnston, a middle school mathematics teacher.
  • Gretchen Stroschein Thomson '59 Chair for the Teaching of United States History

    Established in 2002 by Honorary Lifetime Trustee Gretchen Stroschein Thomson '59 to honor the teaching of United States history. 
  • James G. Scripps Chair in English

    Established in 1988 by the Board of Trustees through a bequest from James G. Scripps, this chair provides the salary and professional growth stipend for a member of the English department. The current holder of this chair is Catherine Michaud, English teacher.
  • Jan and Richard Hunter Chair in Theater

    Established in 2001 by Jan and Richard Hunter, parents of Greg '92 and Scott '99 Hunter in support of the theatrical arts department and in particular drama teacher Courtney Flanagan whose magic has made a difference in the lives of so many student performers. The current holder of this chair is Courtney Flanagan.
     
  • Laurie and Kim Peterson Endowed Faculty Chair

    Established in 2015 by Laurie and Kim Peterson, parents of Claire Lauren Peterson ’06.
  • Lawrence P. Hartigan Sr. Memorial

    Established in 2000 by Mr. Lawrence P. Hartigan's grandchildren Katie ‘01, Sarah ‘04, and Brennan '07 Hartigan in loving memory of their grandfather's life long interest in and support of education.
  • Lawrence Waddy Chaplain's Chair

    Established in 2003 by an anonymous donor in recognition of the stellar contributions made by The Reverend Lawrence Waddy, former School chaplain, during his tenure from 1963 to 1967. The current holder of this chair is The Rev. Brian Fidler, School Chaplain.
  • Marlene Teitelman Department Chair in Music

    Established in 1998 by an anonymous donor, this department chair honors the accomplishments of Marlene Teitelman in music, as well as her tireless devotion to the School from 1983 to 2009. The department member who holds this chair receives a professional growth stipend and the department receives funds for program development. 
  • Michael and Karen Stone Department Chair in History

    Established in 2014 by Karen and Michael Stone, parents of Rachel ’17 and Samantha ’20 Stone. A School Trustee, Michael and his wife Karen believe that only by increasing the endowment can the academic strength of the School be ensured in perpetuity. The current holder of this chair is Richard del Rio, history teacher.
  • Michael W. Teitelman Department Chair in History

    Established in 1998 by an anonymous donor, this department chair honors the service of Headmaster Michael W. Teitelman as head of The Bishop's School and history teacher from 1983 to 2009. The department member who holds this chair receives a professional growth stipend and the department receives funds for program development. 
     
  • Oliver Family Endowed Chair in Educational Leadership for the Dean of Studies

    Established in 2015 by Elizabeth and Dene Oliver, parents of Isabelle ’16 and Emma ’18 Oliver, in recognition of the leadership of the academic program under the guidance of the dean of studies. The current holder of this chair is Binney Caffrey, director of curriculum and instruction.
  • Reuben H. Fleet

    Established in 1985 by the family of the late Reuben H. Fleet. The Reuben H. Fleet Foundation Fund at The San Diego Foundation has contributed in the areas of financial aid and professional growth to more than 20 different schools and universities.
  • The Ankeny Chair in English

    Established in 2014 by Joy and Don Ankeny, parents of Hannah ’15 and Julia ’15 Ankeny, in recognition of the passion and commitment that the members of the School’s faculty have for their students.  The current holder of this chair is Gary Hendrickson, chair of the English department.
  • The Associated Student Body Council Faculty Chair

    Established in 2003 by an anonymous donor to provide a stipend and support for the professional growth of the member of the Bishop's faculty who serves in this critical advisory capacity. The current holder of this chair is Dr. Regina Ballard, the advisor of the Associated Student Body Council. 
  • The Barkett Family Endowment

    Established in 2001 by the Lisa and William Barkett and their children in recognition of the quality of the School's academic program.
     
  • The Bradbury Family Endowed Chair in Chemistry

    Established in 2014 by Annette and Daniel Bradbury, parents of Nadine ’15 and Luke ’19 Bradbury. As the chair of the board’s advancement committee Annette and her husband recognize and support the need to increase the endowment to ensure faculty excellence for generations to come. The current holder of this chair is Ted Torretti, chemistry teacher. 
  • The James Updegraff Department Chair in Foreign Languages

    Established in 2007 by an anonymous donor in honor of James Updegraff, 37-year professor of classical languages, for excellence in teaching of foreign languages. Mr. Updegraff is the inaugural holder of the chair that bears his name.
  • The Manchester Chaplain's Chair

    Established in 2001 by Honorary Lifetime Trustee Betsy and Doug Manchester, parents of Molly '84, Katie '85, Sally '88, Annie '99, and Doug '01 Manchester; grandparents of Madeleine '13, Anne '15 and Ford '19 Eldredge, and Molly Ricchiuti '16. The family has endowed the chaplain's program to ensure that it will continue to be as meaningful and successful for future generations of children as it had been for the Manchester children. The current holder of this chair is The Reverend Brian Fidler, School Chaplain. 
     
  • The Manchester Football Endowment

    Established in 2001 by Honorary Lifetime Trustee Betsy and Doug Manchester, parents of Molly '84, Katie '85, Sally '88, Annie '99, and Doug '01; grandparents of Madeleine '13, Anne '15 and Ford '19 Eldredge. This fund was created in gratitude for the experience Doug Manchester '01 had in the athletic, and specifically, the football program.
  • The Otto A. Mower Chair for the Teaching of the Humanities

    Established in 1987 by the Board of Trustees in recognition of the contributions that Dr. Otto Mower made to the School from 1971, when he joined the faculty, through his retirement in 2004. Dr. Mower's many friends and former students funded this chair. The current holder of this chair is Dr. Nicole Holland, Advanced Placement Art History teacher. 
     
  • W.M. Keck Foundation

    Established in 1992 through an endowment grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation of Los Angeles. Through the Challenge to Scientists, members of Bishop's science community contributed their resources on a two to one basis with the Foundation's resulting in permanent support for science faculty endowment.
  • Wattis-Dumke Foundation Chair in Computer Science

    Established by the Wattis-Dumke Foundation in 2013 to honor exceptional faculty in computer science. The current holder of this chair is Irasema Triana, chair of the computer science department. 
  • Weiler-Moore Faculty Chair

    This fund was established in 2003 by Cynthia Weiler and Blake Moore, the parents of Lauren Moore '01, for a distinguished member of The Bishop's School faculty.

The Bishop’s School is an independent, coeducational college-preparatory day school for students in grades six through twelve who live throughout San Diego County. Founded in 1909, the School is affiliated with the Episcopal church.
