Bishop’s choral program has grown and developed over the past several years. Students graduate with an enjoyment of singing and often continue this art form into college and beyond. The program offers all students, regardless of their abilities, a place to belong, a place to learn and develop musically, a place to sing and perform.
In middle school, students develop their singing voice and music reading skills by participating in Vocal Music as part of their arts rotation. All middle school students can join Middle School Choir, and in eighth grade, they have the opportunity to take Middle School Select Ensemble and Musical Theater 8, a performance class that combines music, dance and drama. All choirs perform in the winter and spring choral concerts.
In upper school, men who enjoy singing can join the Knight’s Chorus, and women can sing with the Knightingales. From these ensembles, students can advance into Bel Canto, the select women’s choir or Bishop’s Singers, the select mixed choir.
The upper school auditioned ensembles participate in numerous singing opportunities outside of school, including festivals, competitions, school and community events. The choirs usually travel every other year to larger national festivals. Recent trips include NYC, where students sang at Carnegie Hall, along with San Francisco and Arizona. They also participate in the winter and spring choral concerts.
