Global Online Academy (GOA) is a not-for-profit consortium of leading independent schools from around the world dedicated to developing 21st century skills while preserving the academic excellence that is the hallmark of its member schools. The Bishop’s School is a member of Global Online Academy and offers limited enrollment in GOA classes to its students. GOA classes do not satisfy departmental diploma requirements. However, the rich course offerings greatly enhance opportunities to learn and explore topics not covered or conveniently scheduled in the program on campus. GOA classes are taught at a high level by faculty from member schools. Students should anticipate a workload similar to that of a course taken on campus. For more information about GOA, please visit www.globalonlineacademy.org or contact Bishop’s Dean of Curriculum and InstructionBinney Caffrey. The Mission The mission of the Global Online Academy is to replicate in online classrooms the intellectually rigorous programs and excellent teaching that are hallmarks of its member schools; to foster new and effective ways, through best practices in online education, for students to learn; and to promote students’ global awareness and understanding by creating truly diverse, worldwide, online schoolroom communities.
How it Works In a typical week, students commit five to seven hours to their GOA course. The classes do not have set meeting times because the teacher and 18 students are from schools around the world, located in multiple time zones. Rather, the teacher creates the class materials and assigns students work throughout the week. Students manage their own schedules and log onto Haiku, the online learning management system GOA uses, on a regular basis to complete assignments and engage with the class. Students collaborate on work with their classmates, often using Skype or other similar platforms.
Students partake in cross-cultural, global discussions, generating insights that they then bring back to their brick-and-mortar classrooms.
Students learn to share their local and personal perspectives on global issues with students from all over the world –and are exposed to a bevy of perspectives from their classmates that they otherwise wouldn’t encounter.
Students need to learn how to communicate effectively through email and in digital public venues, as well as how to collaborate with others who aren’t in close proximity.
GOA uniquely prepares students for what they will encounter in college and the workforce.
GOA currently represents three continents and sixteen states and will continue to add new member schools and new voices to the classes.
