Welcome to The Bishop's School

“Look upward, not downward. Look outward, not inward.  Look forward, not backward,” and finally “lend a hand.”

According to Edward Everette Hale, a Unitarian clergyman, these words were the sound advice of Ellen Browning Scripps, the founder of The Bishop’s School. Miss Scripps was an optimist, and she believed that education was the path to both social improvement and personal enlightenment.

Bishop’s alumna and biographer, Molly McClain ‘84, wrote, “[Ellen Scripps] trusted in the future of science and in the creative power of the human mind. At the same time, she recognized the need to create and sustain community in an age of rapid urban growth and technological change.” The Bishop’s School strives to embody Scripps’ unfailing belief in the power of the human spirit.

Bishop’s is a school of 800 students in grades six through twelve. Our community is committed to discussion-based, student-centered instruction. This pedagogical approach relies on close reading, critical thinking, analytical writing, experimentation, and an openness to honest and challenging discussions. It also relies on a fundamentally human-to-human interaction: Student and teacher exploring ideas and concepts together in order to reach a deeper, better understanding.

Every day, our faculty interacts with students individually and in small groups. Students are encouraged to create and engage in dialogue with others and to explore new ideas and solutions for both traditional social issues and those created by Miss Scripps’ prediction of that “technological change.” On the athletic fields, on the stage and in the art studio, we strive for excellence through hard work and a joyful pursuit of our passions.

We are a community of learners. We understand that the commitment, dedication and curiosity of each of our students has the potential to transform our School, our community and our world.

Above all, we want our students to understand that their approach with others, guided by kindness, fairness and integrity, will enhance their understanding of the world and establish a foundation for relationships that will endure the test of time. We welcome you to the Bishop’s community!

Sincerely,
Carol K. Barry
