Daxton Gutekunst ’23 was interviewed live on July 8 for VoiceAmerica’s program “The Power of Young People to Change the World.”

According to the episode description, ““The pandemic has amplified the existing academic challenges faced by marginalized groups in America. This week’s guest, Daxton Gutekunst, believes there is no one better to help young people in need than other young people. Listen now to hear how Daxton’s organization, Kid-By-Kid, is addressing educational disparities and bridging divides between youth in his community through free tutoring services.”

Indeed, Daxton was eager to note that “the end of June marked KBK’s amazing milestone of 5,000+ 1:1 tutoring hours! Lessons have been going on all summer and since that milestone more than 500 hours have been added.” Kid By Kid volunteers work with elementary and middle school age students from refugee, immigrant and English as a second language communities.

He gives a special nod to Bishop’s Director of Global Education David Moseley and Director of Service Learning Jackie Gomez at the halfway mark of the interview, along with other mentions of the Bishop’s community throughout the session. Daxton shares, “I was honored to have been asked, though was definitely a little nervous about the ‘live’ aspect!” adding, “They found me through the national conference I attended in April where I presented my student showcase:  “Evolving the Education Paradigm - The Untapped Resource to Bridge the Education Gap - Kids!”
