The School has announced the appointments of Vivien Valenzuela Mallick as director of admissions and financial aid and Wendy Chang as the director of college counseling. Both will join Bishop's in summer 2021.
Vivien Valenzuela Mallick will join the Bishop’s community as its new director of admissions and financial aid. Vivien currently serves as the director of admission operations at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, where she has worked since 1999. In this role, she oversees the daily operations of a busy, highly-selective office, including day student recruitment, event planning, and admissions marketing and social media.
Vivien served on The Association of Boarding Schools North American Boarding Initiative Advisory Committee from 2016 to 2019, along with Bishop’s Head of School Ron Kim and shares, “I was compelled by working with Ron again, someone I knew from his long tenure at Exeter and whom I have always admired. I am excited about joining the Bishop’s community and look forward to bringing my energy and experience to the admission team.”
In discussing Vivien’s appointment, Ron says, “Vivien is known at her current school as the admissions officer who can get even the most reserved student to open up. She brings enthusiasm and energy as well as two decades of experience at one of the country's finest independent schools. She will join a terrific team and an operation that Kim Cooper has led so well.”
Currently Vivien is a member of the Association of Independent Schools Admission Professionals’ Advisory Council for Admission and Enrollment Professionals of Color. In 2013, she and her colleagues from Andover’s communications department won Gold in the Case District I Excellence Awards for their admissions website, Walkabout, and in 2017, a Brilliance Award for their printed viewbook “The Insider’s Guide to the Big Blue Nice Experience” from InspirED.
Vivien earned a bachelor’s degree from Tufts University. A New Jersey native and proud parent of two children, Vivien enjoys spending time with family and friends, cooking and listening to live music.
Wendy Chang will join Bishop’s as the director of college counseling. Wendy is in her 28th year in college admissions and counseling, having worked at numerous secondary schools as a college counselor over the last 17 years. She is currently the director of deans and college counseling at Avenues: the World School in New York City.
Prior to Avenues, she served for three years as the director of college counseling at St. John’s School in Houston, Texas. She was previously the founding U.S. college advisor for the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG) in South Africa, creating the Academy's college counseling program (Yes, she has met Oprah!). Before OWLAG, Wendy was director of college guidance at the Collegiate School in New York City; during her tenure there, The Wall Street Journal ranked Collegiate the #1 secondary school in the United States for selective college admissions. Wendy began her career as a senior admissions officer at Harvard College.
Ron is looking forward to Wendy joining Bishop’s and says, “We have a great group of college counselors, and our goal is to ensure that the college process for our students and their families is the best that one can find anywhere. Wendy brings that kind of leadership experience and insight from her years as a director of college counseling and also from the college side as an admissions officer. I know that our community will appreciate her warmth and deep care for students.”
Wendy earned a bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and a master’s degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. In her free time, she enjoys reading, running, traveling and spending time with her family.
