Virtual AP Art Portfolio

Visual arts department chair Elizabeth Wepsic presented at the Nov. 5 California Art Education Association (CAEA) annual conference, which took place entirely online.

Her session, titled AP Portfolio in a Current Virtual World, took “a deeper look into how art portfolios aid in student-centered learning along with the ins and out of the AP Art and Design curriculum.” She shared examples of “how students document their process of their creative expression and how experimentation and revision help guide artistic development.”
Ms. Wepsic explains, “Art education goes beyond studio art practice; virtual learning empowers students to reflect deeper into their own relationship to art and generates organized content and resources to enhance the classes. Students have one-on-one time with me on Zoom as we share screens and process their art portfolio together.  I feel like an art mentor and art coach in addition to an art teacher.”
One of the slides she shared is the second photo at right. She says, “This is a screen shot from Annie Fang '22's Process Journal in Art. This is a requirement in all of my distance learning art classes, allowing for students to document the process of their art making including written components about the materials, process, and ideas. This allows for a visual space to discuss how they experimented, produced, and revised their work. Almost all of the student's work within thematic series are guided by questions.”
Ms. Wepsic plans to share the presentation with colleagues in a future department meeting.
