Beanies for Healing Little Heroes

Last year, director of service learning Jackie Gomez invited advisory groups to create knit beanies for children undergoing cancer treatment. On Friday, Oct. 2, 2020, members of Bishop’s Community Service Initiative (CSI) gathered to put the finishing touches on dozens of loom-knitted beanies in all sizes created by Bishop’s students of all ages.
Alumnus Nathan Wu ’19 and his father Dr. Justin Wu started a non-profit called Healing Little Heroes, delivering superhero-themed beanies to kids with cancer who lose their hair after chemotherapy. As Ms. Gomez points out, “Instead of wearing wigs, the kids have these awesome superhero beanies to wear.” Even better, Nathan and his dad deliver the cozy beanies to the little patients while wearing superhero costumes.
Nathan brought a variety of iron-on superhero patches and joined current CSI members to affix them to the beanies, and senior Austin Yang promoted this activity through CSI and his role as the ASBC service rep. The beanies were made by individual students as well as in advisory groups.
