This summer we had to tackle the issue of not being able to give students a language placement test in person, but we still needed to assess their speaking ability.
Formative, our new paid-for tool, gave us some options we didn't have before.
Julieta Torres-Worstell, chair of Bishop's World Language Department, took the lead and created several levels of placements tests that not only included a video introduction but also video questions to which they had to give audio answers. Spanish teachers Marda Rose and Monica Bustamante were also key players in creating and evaluating the tests. (Great teamwork!)
The results were a solid and quite authentic test-taking experience for our language students. The tests were well-organized, accessible by the whole department, and can be reused each year.
