I Want to Try to Help Where It’s Needed More

The all-school assembly on Thursday, Feb. 6 featured Mr. Michael Brunker, the 2019 recipient of the Mr. San Diego Award from the San Diego Rotary Club.
Mr. Brunker is a Bishop's alumni parent (Michelle Brunker ’08), and served as the Executive Director of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA in Southeast San Diego for 22 years.
He shared in-depth stories of Jackie Robinson and Martin Luther King, intersecting their experiences and writings with national and international events of the time as well as his own childhood in Detroit.
Making his way to San Diego by way of a professional coaching career, Mr. Brunker founded a number of youth athletic programs throughout the region. He spoke of humility and the power of uplifting others while sharing stories of the Black experience in San Diego.
Mr. Brunker focused on Jackie Robinson’s statement, “I want to try to help where it’s needed more,” offering students inspiration and action steps to consider going forward, encouraging them to make a difference and an impact in their daily lives.
