Bishop's Junior Earns Third Place in DanceSport Championships
Daniel Zhao ’21 demonstrated his impressive dance skills this summer in the Desert Classic’s 20th Anniversary event.
Some of Daniel’s first steps were on a dance floor when his mother took him along to her own dance classes; she introduced him to ballroom dancing at age five, and 11 years later, Daniel is passionate about it. He says it’s been a part of his life for as long as he can remember.
Spending as many as 12 hours each week in training, he says, “For me, dance takes off the mental stress of school and is something that I look forward to in my day.” He adds, “It has become a big part of my life mentally and physically.”
He says of the dance competitions, “The feeling of adrenaline rushing through my veins is always the greatest feeling.” That was certainly the case on July 12, 2019, when Daniel and his dance partner Simona Itkin took the floor at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort and Spa in Palm Desert. Coached by Sergey Kvashyn, the pair competed in the youth division (ages 16-18). Check out a video clip here. (Daniel is wearing contestant number 323).
Daniel notes, “My favorite dance is the Samba, which has roots in Brazil and emphasizes a lot of body movement and moving steps. The moves in this dance also have a sort of bounce to them, almost like iambic pentameter in poetry.”
