Bishop's Academic League had a very successful season this year. The Novice team, led by captains Jeffrey Wang ’21 and Drew Kessler ’21, finished the regular season with a 4-3 record. Both JV (led by Tobey Shim ’20 and Yasha Kharrati ’20) and Varsity (led by captains Rohit Raguram ’19 and Sebastian Hayden ’19) finished at 7-0. JV and Varsity also placed first in their divisions of the San Diego Metro League, which includes teams from Francis Parker, La Jolla Country Day, La Jolla High, Cathedral, University City, Mira Mesa and Scripps Ranch. Varsity qualified to play in the Metro League championship televised on April 16, 2019.
Sebastian writes, “The last match of the regular season, a 330-285 victory over La Jolla which guaranteed the Varsity team a spot in the Metro League championships, was particularly memorable. We probably had more student and faculty turnout at that match than at every other match this season combined, and our victory was immediately followed by a raucous ‘What time is it?’ cheer. It was great seeing so many familiar faces in the crowd.”
“At the Metro League championships, the Varsity team beat Coronado High School in the semifinal round 575-135, and then went on to beat La Jolla High School in the final round 560-150. Both of those matches can be streamed here. Bishop's has not won the Metro League for many years, so our success this year was a proud moment for all of us. It also guaranteed us a spot in the County championship, which was televised live on May 2.
“At the County championship, Bishop's beat Valhalla High School in the semifinal round 535-450, but lost to a formidable Canyon Crest Academy team in the final, 735-300. We were thrown off a bit by the different question type that they used at the County championship (Bishop's practices with National Association of Quizbowl Tournaments questions which are written in such a way that they reward detailed knowledge of the subject matter, whereas the questions at the championship emphasize buzzer speed), but ultimately, second place in San Diego County is something to be proud of. Bishop's Academic League has never, to our knowledge, made it this far in the competition before, so anything beyond Metro League was just icing on the cake.”
Competing in the Metro League televised program were Rohit, Sebastian, Aaron Liu ’19, Tobey and Yasha. Other team members who competed at the varsity level during the season were seniors Ivan Savchuk, Allison Zhang, Sam Chun and Jack Knickrehm, and juniors Miles McInerney and Michelle Fan. The JV roster included Michelle, Miles, Matthew Ai ’20, Annika Feng ’20, Eric Zhang ’20, Sabrina Tian ’20, Jess Li ’20, Jeffrey and Drew. Sophomores Eric Pan, Anna Poon, Jackie Wu, Miguel Solis, Nicholas Chen and Schuyler Capita and freshmen Stanley Wei, Sacha DePoyen-Brown, Joe Cramer, Ellie Hodges and Luca Patapoutian rounded out the Novice roster.
