This doubleheader began with a blast. Specifically, the first two Knights batters of the game, Cooper Coleman ’22 – on the first pitch of the game – and Austin Schroeder ’20 – on a 2-2 count – blasted back-to-back home runs! Those two homers set the tone as Bishop’s baseball brought home two victories on March 16 against a scrappy Sweetwater squad.
The Red Devils fired back in the bottom of the first with a run of their own fueled by two Knights errors. The game remained at 2-1 until the third when Austin led off with a single and a stolen base. Graham Cartwright ’19 advanced him to third on a hard ground ball single to left field. Dom Haley ’19’s hit to the shortstop drove Austin home from third to expand the lead to 3-1.
The team added all the runs it needed in the top of fifth. With one out, Austin doubled to center. Graham followed with a single to short that moved Schroeder to third. In a repeat performance, Dom drove in Austin from third with a liner to right, and sent Graham to the corner. Up stepped catcher Joe Maier ’21, who knocked another single to center and scored Graham and Dom. The inning ended Knights up 6-1. A single in the bottom of the seventh, aided by two errors and a double steal, allowed Sweetwater to close the gap to 6-3 for the final.
A great game for Austin, he had four hits. In his seven innings on the mound, he one-hit Sweetwater, had 10 strikeouts and only one walk for the win. The team exploded with 14 hits. Bode Grieve ’22, Cooper, Graham and Joe each had two hits.
In the second game of the doubleheader against Sweetwater, the team needed late-inning heroics. Runs did not materialize until the third inning, when Ava Leota ’22 and Austin were walked. Graham drove both home with a single to right and he advanced to second on the throw. Dom then delivered another line shot to center, sending Graham to third. Dom stole second and went to third on a Maier single that scored Cartwright. Bishop’s was up 3-0.
To start the bottom of the third, the Red Devils narrowed the margin to 3-2 on a walk and three straight singles. Graham relieved Hunter Kates ’21, inheriting a runner at second base. A sacrifice bunt moved that runner to third, but Cartwright struck out the ensuing batter and Maier got the Sweetwater player out trying to steal home. In the bottom of the fourth, Sweetwater tied the game on two straight doubles.
Austin led off the seventh with a walk followed by a Cartwright double, sending Schroeder to third. He took home on a passed ball, followed by another Dom double to center to score Graham for a 5-3 lead. That was all the team needed as they retired Sweetwater scoreless in the seventh.
In this second game, Dom had three hits, joined by Graham and Joe with two apiece. Graham also got the win, pitching five innings and producing six strikeouts while allowing one walk and one run. The team sports a 5-2 record and faces Maranatha Christian at home on Thursday, March 21 at 4 p.m.
