More Service Learning Updates

Earlier this fall, students contributed Halloween costumes to one organization and books to another. The recipients shared their gratitude with Director of Service Learning Jackie Gomez.
Founded in San Diego in 1990, Stand up for Kids is a nationally recognized non-profit organization with programs in 18 cities across the U.S. and Washington, D.C. The nearly all-volunteer group works directly with homeless youth. Bishop’s students collected more than 10 boxes of gently-used Halloween costumes and donated them to this organization. Some of the photos at right show the children enjoying their new costumes.
The last two photos are from SOAR Academy Kearney Mesa, the school located within Juvenile Hall (Juvenile Court and Community Schools), showing the cart full of books donated. When Sam De La Cruz ’20 saw that there were unused books at the end of our annual Book Exchange at the start of the school year, he coordinated the donation.
One of the teachers there wrote, “…Students have enjoyed reading soft-cover texts that were donated such as ‘The Giver’ and ‘The Outsiders.’ …With little more than a few books to read, reading becomes one of their favorite pastimes… Thank you for thinking of the youth who are in custody.”
