The Learning Center

The learning services team manages The Learning Center, SAGE tutoring program and the Writing Center. They collaborate with students, faculty, administrators, parents, and any outside parties to ensure that all students have the strategies necessary to understand themselves and their learning. Learning services faculty are located on the top floor of the Manchester Library and Learning Center.

The learning services team celebrates and supports the spectrum of neurodiversity at Bishop’s. Students with and without diagnosed learning differences benefit from working with peer tutors, faculty or any members of the learning services team to better understand the skills and strategies that will help them to be independent thinkers, learners and self-advocates. The resources provided by the learning services team are available to students in all grades and are included in Bishop’s tuition.

The Learning Center

Visit The Learning Center to learn about your learning, your brain and its processes, assistive technology to support learning, and a variety of time-management and study skills.

In addition to organizing standardized and in class accommodations, Bishop's Director of Teaching and Learning Stephanie Ramos and Learning Specialist Jennifer Miller work with students to ensure that they have the skills and strategies necessary to demonstrate their abilities. This includes managing academic approaches and mindsets, school-related anxieties, executive function skills, assistive technologies, and much more.

The goals of The Learning Center are to:

Reach and teach students before they experience academic frustrations and minimize their current frustrations related to learning and studying.

Empower students in their pursuits of lifelong learning. Understanding yourself and your own learning is the first step toward academic success.

Support faculty in the strategies that best enable them to challenge and support their students.

The Learning Center works individually with students and parents to help them understand their learning strengths and challenges, also known as a learning profile, and the strategies that can assist them in their executive functions and metacognitive strategies. These include, but are not limited to, time and materials management, motivation, task initiation, self-regulation and self-advocacy.

The Learning Center is happy to answer any questions and to help individual students find which area of learning services would best support their needs.

SAGE Tutoring

Bishop's Academic Support Coordinator Jane Mattox organizes SAGE Tutors across disciplines. SAGE (Students As Grassroots Educators) is a peer tutoring organization started by Bishop’s students from the Class of 2013. Trained upper school students assist their peers in a wide range of subjects. Some tutors are specially trained as writing coaches and are available to help with any part of the writing process in any discipline. SAGE tutoring is designed to supplement time with a student’s teachers, not to replace it.

The goals of the SAGE tutoring program are to:

Promote and support active and independent learning
Develop a positive approach to learning
Aid in developing a student’s competence and/or confidence in a particular subject

The Writing Center

The Writing Center is a division of SAGE Tutoring. SAGE writing coaches are trained in the fine art of helping their peers navigate the complex task of writing in any discipline. This work spans the spectrum of the writing process, from brainstorming and planning to final polishing. In addition to the SAGE writing coaches, the Director of the Writing Center Catherine Michaud also works individually with students and collaborates with faculty across disciplines to identify and support best practices in the teaching of writing.

The goals of The Writing Center are to:

Coach students in developing their writing skills in all disciplines
Assist teachers in their classes
Promote communication and collaboration about writing within and between departments in order to:
- develop a common language
- share effective practices
- map and align a rigorous writing curriculum across disciplines and grade levels.

Bishop’s faculty members collaborate with learning services to ensure a wide variety of resources are available on campus. If a family chooses to work with a third party tutor, evaluator, and/or consultant, they are asked to let our director of teaching & learning know so she can facilitate and serve as a liaison between Bishop’s and the third party.
