In this course, students learn the fundamentals of listening, speaking, reading and writing the Chinese language.
Chinese 1B
In this course students continue the study of listening, speaking, reading and writing begun in Chinese IA, attaining the Novice-High level on the ACTFL proficiency scale.
Coding for Fun 8
Have fun as you learn the basics of programming with Python through an interactive framework and hands-on approach.
Dance 8
This semester course offers eighth grade students the opportunity to explore the elementary level of modern and jazz techniques.
Drama 8
This course is focused on improvisation and an in-depth exploration of character development.
English 6
This course is designed to lay the foundation of intellectual habits and academic skills.
English 7
This course focuses on developing the fundamental skills of critical reading, creative and expository writing, vocabulary and grammar.
English 8
This course continues to develop students’ skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Experimental Programming 8
This beginning course in computer science introduces students to the basic computer programming constructs.
French 1A
Students in this course acquire the fundamentals of the four essential skills of language learning: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
French 1B
In this course, students continue to build proficiency and confidence in speaking, listening, reading and writing, and perform at the Novice-High performance level according to ACTFL standards.
History 6
The sixth grade history curriculum is designed to foster curiosity for the ancient world through inquiry-based learning.
Jazz Band I/II
Students with three or more years of experience on saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, drums, and string instruments with an interest in jazz and contemporary repertoire and improvisation are encouraged to enroll in Jazz I/II.
Jazz Band III/IV
Students with four or more years of experience on saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, piano, bass, drums, or strings with an interest in jazz, contemporary repertoire, and improvisation are encouraged to enroll in Jazz III/IV.
Latin 1A
This course covers material equivalent to the first semester of the Latin I upper school course.
Latin 1B
This course is a continuation of Latin IA and covers material equivalent to the second semester of the Latin I upper school course.
Mathematics 1
This course is designed to consolidate student understanding of arithmetic while developing the organization, communication, and problem-solving skills necessary for further study of mathematics.
Mathematics 1 Enriched
This course emphasizes problem solving and is designed to prepare students for success in the enriched track in subsequent years.
Mathematics 2
This course prepares students for the study of algebra and is designed to nurture the growth of an individual as a problem solver.
Mathematics 2 Enriched
This course is more demanding, considering a greater number of problem types, and providing less instruction and support before homework is assigned.
Mathematics 3
Math 3 is the first course in the integrated Algebra I/Geometry/Algebra II sequence.
Mathematics 3 Enriched
Math 3E is problem-centered, but is more demanding than Math 3, considering a greater number of problem types.
Middle School Choir
This course is designed to introduce singers to the basics of choral music singing.
Middle School Physical Education
The department presents a varied and flexible program in which students develop physical fitness, physical skills and socially desirable habits of good sportsmanship and teamwork, as well as an interest in recreational activities.
Musical Theater 8: Performance Section
The focus of this semester course, which is team taught by the music, theater and dance departments, is the production of a musical revue.
Musical Theater 8: Technical Section
Students learn skills necessary to build stage sets and props, create stage lighting and serve as the production crew for the final Musical Theater 8 Performance class production.
Photo Digital 8
This course explores elements of digital photo, how it has developed as a tool to use from defined works of art to everyday use.
Robotics 8
This course offers students the opportunity to learn and apply mathematical, scientific and computer programming skills through robot design and construction.
Science 6
The sixth grade science curriculum is designed to lay the foundation of intellectual character and academic skills that students need to productively engage with questions, problems, uncertainties and enigmas through science and engineering.
Science 7
The seventh grade science curriculum focuses on life science as it relates to humans and the environment.
Science 8
Science 8 offers a hands-on science experience through inquiry-based lab activities, field experiences and engineering challenges.
Seventh Grade Art Rotation
Students are exposed to a number of different art mediums, concepts and themes to gain more exposure to all the mediums of visual and performing arts.
Singers 8
At the end of grade seven, students can audition to participate in Singers 8 in grade eight.
Sixth Grade Art Rotation
The sixth grade arts rotation provides students a diverse foundation that introduces all of our art studios and facilities.
Social Studies 7
Social Studies 7 is designed to help students learn to think like social scientists and geographers as they develop 21st century skills that help them investigate our world.
Spanish 1A
This course presents an introduction to Spanish and develops the four essential skills of language learning.
Spanish 1B
Spanish 1B students practice basic skills in speaking, listening comprehension, writing and reading.
Street Art 8
This is a unique and fun hands-on art class that introduces students to the concept of street art and how public art impacts local communities.
Studio Art 8
This course is designed to expose students to a variety of materials and techniques in art-making, allowing them to develop their drawing, painting and art-making skills.
Symphonic Orchestra
Similar to a large symphony orchestra, but smaller in size, the symphonic orchestra is meant for the more serious and dedicated instrumental musician.
Technical Theater 8
Students learn skills necessary to build stage sets and props, create stage lighting, and serve as the production crew for the middle school play/musical and additional middle school productions.
World Languages 6
Sixth grade students devote one quarter of the school year to introductory modules about each of the four languages taught at Bishop’s: Chinese, French, Latin and Spanish.
World Religions 8
This course introduces students to the origins of five of the world’s major religious and philosophical traditions and the cultures that produced them.
