USNA Appointment for Bishop’s Senior

Capt. Midgley says, “I have been the Blue and Gold Officer for 28 years now. There have never been this many Bishop’s grads at the Academy at the same time and all in separate classes.”

Merle Richman ’19, Christie Linnard ’20 and May McConkey ’21 each made the transition from Bishop’s to the rigors of the Academy. Capt. Midgley told Nihko during the presentation, “I think it is safe to say that you already have some warm contacts and supporters there and I encourage you to connect with them and learn from them.”

An appointment to the USNA is equivalent to a full, four-year scholarship that covers tuition, room and board, medical and dental benefits, and a monthly midshipman stipend. “Over 15,000 candidates applied this year,” shares Capt. Midgley, adding, “only about 1,200 will be inducted in the Class of 2026.”

Upon completion of his four years, Nihko will earn a bachelor of science degree in one of the 26 majors offered, and will be commissioned as an officer of the Navy or the Marine Corps. Nihko also plans to continue rowing at the Academy. He is currently part of a local team that has competed around the country this year.

Presenting the certificate, Capt. Midgley assured Nihko, “You will have the opportunity to make a huge difference in the world and I know you are going to accomplish great things.”
