Middle School

Middle School Drama Club is open to any 7th or 8th grade student. In the fall, the club meets once a week on Mondays, culminating in an informal performance. During the winter, club members are encouraged to participate in the Lower Division of the English Speaking Union Shakespeare Recitation Contest. Faculty from the Theatre and English Departments offer students help with selecting monologues and coaching. During the spring, 7th graders are able to audition for a scripted play.

The Middle School Singing Club is open to any middle school student, boy or girl, who likes to sing or who would like to try something new. It is offered first semester only and will meet on Mondays from 3 – 4 in the music room. It does not conflict with the drama club or the sport's program at Bishops. Students will sing a variety of fun songs and work to present a couple of musical selections for the annual December Christmas concert.

Parents and students wanting a more complete instruction in singing should sign up to take the Select Ensemble class, which meets second semester. For more information on this class click here

There are two instrumental music clubs for middle school students offered after school. Students who want to learn more about jazz can sign up for the Middle School Jazz Club and those more interested in classical music can join the Instrumental Music Ensemble Club.

The clubs are not in conflict with any middle school sport.

Upper School

Our Upper School Theatre season includes at least two fully staged productions each year. Generally, a musical is produced every two years, with a Shakespearian or other classic production taking its place on alternate years. Other smaller scale opportunities are also generally part of the season. Auditions are open to any student in the Upper School. (Occasionally a show is produced for which auditions are only open to ninth and tenth grade students, giving them a greater opportunity for casting in lead roles.) Technical opportunities are open to students on all productions. Highly qualified students are able to direct or design a main stage production. Most advanced students have an opportunity to direct or design smaller projects.

We also have two student Coffee Houses each year. This venue, produced by our advanced acting class, gives Upper School students an opportunity to perform anything from a solo guitar piece, to stand-up comedy, to an acting scene, to a full band set.

The upper school participates each year in the English Speaking Union Shakespearian Recitation Contest. Students in ninth grade participate in the Lower Division. Students in grades ten through twelve participate in the upper division contest, judged by both faculty and outside professionals. One student is selected to represent the school at the County contest. After school preparatory coaching is made available to all students.

Students interested in competing in the oral interpretation categories of the Speech Team should contact Speech Team sponsor, Matt Valji.
