Military Families

Bishop's veteran and active-duty service members and their students

San Diego is home to several Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard bases, and 28 students from active-duty military families have found their home at Bishop's.

Military families are valued members of the Bishop's community and their service and sacrifice does not go unnoticed.

Several of our faculty and staff have personal connections to the military, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the unique challenges faced by military families in our community. Their experiences and insights enrich our campus culture, ensuring we provide compassionate support and recognition for the sacrifices  made by these families.

Our Dean of Students Office and school counselors work closely with military families who are preparing for or are in the midst of deployments to best support their child(ren). The School also hosts an affinity space for students of active-duty families to support one another and bond over shared experiences.

We automatically waive the admissions application fee for active-duty military families. Military families are welcome to apply for financial aid, and we have recently established endowed scholarship funds just for military families.

Applying for Financial Aid

The Bishop’s School uses the Clarity Application to determine a family’s level of financial need based on the information that families share in the application, which includes assets, income, expenses and debts.

For all other questions or concerns, please visit our FAQ or contact Vivien Valenzuela Mallick, director of admissions and financial aid, at (858) 875-0809 or email financialaid@bishops.com.

"At first, I was nervous to attend Bishop's, where  military families are a small minority.  But from day one, I have felt like family.  Bishop's appreciates the sacrifices of our service members and demonstrates  that care by sponsoring the Children of Military  Families affinity space and hosting outreach events every year.  People here truly care about who you are as a person, and I couldn't be prouder to be a Bishop's Knight and part of such a welcoming community."

"I would recommend Bishop's to any military family looking for the perfect balance of academic support and a loving community. My elementary school had many military kids so I was worried it would be a difficult shift, but it's been really easy to transition into the environment here.  I'm especially struck by how curious people are and how willing they are to learn about what's going on in our local military community. It's been great to be able to share that piece of my family's life with others here at Bishop's.
