"Do Justice. Love Kindness. Walk Humbly.”
When we speak of The Bishop’s School as an Episcopal school, what do we mean?
As an Episcopal school, we model God's love and grace for all people; we educate the whole person, mind, body, heart and spirit; and we raise up informed, thoughtful young people as citizens of the world who act in accordance with the Episcopal values of integrity, inclusion, compassion and justice.
We offer an experience of the fullness of the Episcopal tradition.
We seek to provide students with an experience of the fullness of the Episcopal history and tradition while honoring their own beliefs and faith backgrounds. The Episcopal tradition recognizes the desire of every person to love and to be loved, and offers hope in the life-giving, liberating and unconditional love of God. As an Episcopal school, we believe we experience and connect with love in community: in our relationships with one another, in spiritual reflection, in the pursuit of knowledge and in service to the world. We demonstrate this love, in word and example, by embracing the Episcopal commitments to “love our neighbors as ourselves,” to “strive for justice and peace among all people" and to “respect the dignity of every human being.”
We welcome people of all faiths, identities and walks of life.
Influenced by the Episcopal Church’s wide-open embrace of all people and all walks of life, The Bishop’s School is an intentionally pluralistic and inclusive community that welcomes students of all faith traditions, backgrounds and identities. We celebrate and honor the wisdom and beauty that all religions have to offer, and we affirm the unique worth of every human being. We value human reason, independent and critical thinking, scientific endeavor and the freedom of religious conscience. We invite all members of our community to explore their own beliefs and values, and to honor their traditions more fully and faithfully in their own lives.
We believe service and social justice are fundamental commitments of the life of faith.
The Bishop’s School founders, Ellen Browning Scripps and the Right Reverend Joseph Horsfall Johnson, believed in the power of education to advance the cause of social justice in the world. Inspired by Ms. Scripps’ life and work, and the Episcopal Church’s commitment to justice and peace, The Bishop’s School raises up informed, thoughtful and courageous young people as citizens of the world who act in accordance with our four Episcopal values.
