Designed by noted architect, Carleton Monroe Winslow, St. Mary’s Chapel was a gift from Isabel Green Johnson, Bishop Joseph Horsfall Johnson’s wife. The Bishop Johnson Tower, also designed by Winslow, was added in 1930. Transepts and a baptistry, along with seismic reinforcements, were installed in 1938.
Dedicated on February 15, 1917, the School celebrated the 100th anniversary of St. Mary's Chapel during the 2016-2017 school year.
In celebration of this milestone, on February 26, 2017, an Evensong service was held in the chapel. Members of the upper school choral groups joined a professional choir, accompanied by the prayerful reflections of Chair of the Board of Trustees and Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of San Diego, The Right Reverend James Mathes.
The Collect, written by Bishop Mathes, was introduced at the Evensong:
O God, we give thanks for holy dwellings of grace and beauty where we join with you in sacred moments that consecrate our lives and give them meaning. We particularly give thanks for St. Mary’s Chapel. We rejoice that here each graduate of The Bishop’s School is remembered upon her hallowed walls. The names are the treads of the story of this community bound together around this altar and chapel. And so, we recall also baptisms, weddings, the memorials when your Holy Spirit abounds. May we who come to this sanctuary be touched by the Blessed Virgin Mary who shows us the way of simplicity, serenity and sincerity. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.
