Visual Arts

Visual arts department students can develop their artistic voice through 2D design, 3D design, time-based digital media and studio arts. Within these areas, photography, drawing and painting, stained glass, ceramics, printmaking, sculpture, animation and video techniques are taught.

Visual arts students can construct an art portfolio that demonstrates both an exploration of their artistic expression and their individuality. This student-centered approach allows artists to consider the larger concepts of their work and make choices in the use of media.

Student art is displayed in a variety of locations on campus: Gilman Hall Gallery (located in the admissions lobby), Student Art Gallery (located in the visual arts department) and the Manchester Library & Learning Center (located on the second floor). Members of The Bishop's School are welcome to stop by and view these exhibits; dates for opening events are subject to change. If you have any questions about attending an opening, please contact

Off-campus exhibitions and partnership opportunities are offered throughout the year. Venues include The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, San Diego Museum of Art: Young Art, Museum of Contemporary Art: Extended School Program, San Diego County Fair and San Diego Art Institute: Youth Art.

  • December 2019 - Kylie Larson '24

Kylie approaches her art with great intention. She creates a bubble of a calm and focused space around herself when she paints. Her subjects are directly positioned but also show an importance to the environment around them. Kylie goes with a problem solution each time she works in place of just giving up. Her skill is visible in all of her art and somehow the essence of her work reflects her level personality. Kylie is core to the spirit of art making in Studio 8. She inspires and supports our art community. We appreciate her very much.

  • December 2019 - Belen Suros '22

Belen takes detail seriously and challenges herself to depict exactly what she envisions. Her art brings in the mathematical and scientific elements solely for their visual appeal. Belen shows us what is possible in art and takes apart “art rules” and places them into new form. This is demonstrated in this watercolor painting that uses cardboard backing and relief that cast shadows and bring in realism.
