Dedicated to the development of the whole person, The Bishop's School offers a strong and diverse program in the performing arts. The same high standards that are found in the traditional academic realm can also be found in drama, dance, voice and instrumental instruction. Each of these arts enriches the minds of our students and enhances our entire community.
The Performing Arts department provides instruction in both basic skills to all interested students, and an advanced rigorous program for students interested in preparing themselves for further study in a liberal arts or fine arts program. Advanced programs, requiring an audition, are offered in dance, vocal music, theatre performance, and technical theatre. Break-out groups in jazz music, and chamber music ensembles, allow advanced instrumental players to continue to be challenged throughout their high school years at Bishop’s.
Equally important to the department is our mission to expose all students to a rich variety of performing art experiences, which fosters an appreciation of not only great works, but also different social, cultural, and historical points of view as they are expressed through the performing arts.
In Middle School, the theatre emphasis is to above all give students the skills necessary to best express themselves, whether be it on stage or behind the scenes. Students begin to learn the discipline necessary for successful theatre performance, but the emphasis always is on the process. Students strongly interested in performance can supplement their class theatre studies with participation in after school drama; students especially interested in technical theatre can volunteer for a variety of tech crews on Middle School performances.
