English Department

Summer Reading ButtonAt Bishop’s, students studying English learn to read critically and imaginatively, to write cogently in their own voice, and to participate fully in classroom discussion—both by articulating their own thoughts and feelings and by listening to those of their classmates. While discussion is the principal method of instruction in most classes, students also learn through performance of dramatic scenes, simulation games, student-led presentations, group activities, and lectures. Small class size allows teachers to adapt their styles to meet the needs and interests of individual students, and one-onone conferences outside class are common.

Teaching strategies vary within the Department depending on the grade level and the personality of the teacher. However, the basic strategy is one of active engagement of the students in the learning process. The relatively small class sizes at The Bishop's School allow students and teachers to work together on a personal level to achieve the departmental goals by meeting the individual needs of the students.
